For
me the appeal of photography lies in the innate beauty
of the images. I'm drawn in by their immediacy and instantly
want to know more. I wonder how they were made. What was
the photographer's intention? Their concept? What does
it mean to me? It's the creative process in this art form
of ours that I find most exciting.
"Self", the picture chosen for this year's Site Unseen Cover Prize,
is a self-portrait I submitted for an assignment during my final year of the
Diploma of Applied Photography at RMIT, Melbourne. Those who've seen the picture
have all interpreted it differently and emerged with a new perspective on who
I am (or think I am...).
My lecturers for the course have been enormously supportive and I thank them
all for their tremendous patience and encouragement.
I'm
also very grateful for the assistance and support of my
partner and slightly reluctant model Anton as well as my
mum Giuseppina Del Bene and the Del Bene, Lizzi, Barrett
and Bouwer families. Without you I would not have made
it through!
Thanks also to my wonderful friends, including the new
ones I've made through the course, and to the team at Site
Unseen and Fujifilm for presenting me with this fantastic
opportunity. As our studies draw to a close, getting established
in the industry seems a daunting task and it's terrific
to have something to aspire to and work towards as we find
our collective feet. I'd like to dedicate this achievement
to my dad, Giuseppe Del Bene. I
love you Papa.
