"Real success is finding your lifework in the work that you love." - Pullitzer Prize winning author David McCullough (1933- )
To see the incredible images contained within Site Unseen is to understand real success. Talented young photographers who are quite obviously doing what they love and have the ability to 'express' themselves in such creative and individual terms.
Site Unseen is now into its sixth year, and it continues to evolve and gain awareness - for the program, for the students whose work is featured in the book and, indeed, for the as yet undiscovered talent which exists in Western Australia.
Site Unseen is now bigger than ever. From humble beginnings in 1998 as a Mt Lawley TAFE initiative, it now encompasses all tertiary campuses in Western Australia that offer photography as a course of study. Fujifilm has been proudly sponsoring this unique initiative since the first edition of Site Unseen. Why? Because we value the talent, energy and drive which is and continues to be a hallmark of the program.
As an industry, it's important that we continually encourage student excellence, and inspire our photographers to aim high.Site Unseen does just that. It gives student photographers the chance to let their creativity blossom and produce a high standard of work. And as it tours the nation, Site Unseen provides featured photographers with a 'vehicle' to expose their work to a wider audience, one that might otherwise not have been so readily available to them. It also provides a crucial stepping stone into the professional arena.
Not only does Site Unseen enable featured photographers to raise the bar for themselves, it also sets a benchmark for those student photographers coming through the ranks. I am constantly amazed by the depth of talent which exists in Australia. It's why we all need to get behind initiatives such as Site Unseen and ensure we continue to foster the outstanding ability our young photographers are displaying, and let them focus on something they're clearly passionate about. As actor Warren Beatty once said, "You've achieved success in your field when you don't know whether what you're doing is work or play."
Congratulations to those whose work was chosen to appear in Site Unseen 2005. Your images are exceptional, and your ability and obvious dedication inspirational.
